Introduction to NYDS
The Dance Society is a long established co-curricular activity in Nanyang Girls' High School. Presently, it has a membership of over 80 girls. The dancers are trained under 2 experienced instructresses from China, namely Mdm Chen Lili & Mdm Wang Huili. The dancers are split into 2 groups, the 2/5 & 2/6 group. The 2/5 group is trained under Mdm Chen Lili, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2.30-5.30pm. While the 2/6 group, on the other hand, is trained under Mdm Wang Huili, on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2.30-5.30pm and 10.30am-1.30pm respectively. Both groups take turns to use the dance studio & the school auditorium on alternate weeks.

Ever since its establishment, the Nanyang Dance Society has done our school proud by winning numerous awards in the Singapore Youth Festival Dance Central Judging, which is held once every two years. Up till now, we have won a total record of 9 gold medals, and had our very first dance production - Dance Into the Millenium, held in December 1999. The performance was well-received by the audience. The dance society has also taken part in several school-based performances, such as last year's official opening, the annual Chinese New Year Celebrations, as well as Nanyang Night. Recently, both groups had performed in the school's Festival of the Arts Concert, and 2/6 group was invited to perform in this year's Singapore Youth Festival Opening Ceremony. The dance society has also participated in performances overseas, such as the International Music Festival 1998 held in Sweden, and the International Arts Festival 2000 held in Korea.

This year, both groups took part in the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging and won 2 gold medals for their dance items - Spring By The Riverside and Ode To The Winter Blossoms. Both dances were placed among the top 10, and had thus qualified for the finals. However, since only 1 group from each school was allowed to participate, Spring By The Riverside was thus chosen for the final round due to its excellent performance in the central judging, while Ode To The Winter Blossoms was selected to perform at the opening ceremony. The dance had won a Finalist Award for the school. We applaud both groups' enthusiasm and undying spirit in training for the competitions and performances.

The Nanyang Dance Society looks forward to participating in future performances, competitions, and perhaps the 2nd dance production. We thank all who had constantly rendered us their support in such events.
